In early 2000, Knouse Foods had migrated from a home-grown ERP system to using Oracle Applications. Three years later, in planning ahead for an upcoming implementation of Oracle Process Manufacturing, Knouse discovered that the reporting capability accompanying this additional application was extremely limited. Knouse had already developed customized reports for Oracle Financials, Purchasing, etc., but lacked an efficient method to extract information from its newly purchased Process Manufacturing suite.
The IT team researched various reporting solutions from Oracle, but found that most of these required a technically sophisticated super user and Knouse was instead looking for a solution that its approximately 200 end users could easily master on a more basic level.
Knouse implemented Noetix in mid-2003 and determined it would roll out Oracle Process Manufacturing along with the Noetix reporting solution in order to provide the most effective implementation. Knouse employed two consultants from Noetix who came onsite and assisted the team with developing the views for the Manufacturing suite. This was no easy task as the team had to rely on a test database for analysis because Oracle Process Manufacturing was not yet live and many of the views had to then be re-written once the new suite was fully implemented.
“There are certain issues that are somewhat unique about the processing of fruit that up until recently, I don’t think a lot systems even existed to handle those types of things”, said Craig Hinkle, Treasurer. “Noetix offered a solution to help smooth the process of getting the information our users needed”.
Finally in a position to roll out Oracle Process Manufacturing along with Noetix, Knouse set up a system where each department contained one super user who helped the other end users to develop and run their reports. If the super user wasn’t able to help, the request then got escalated to IT.
Soon after implementation, end users across the company—clerks, managers, warehouse employees—were all using the solution to access information they needed to do their jobs. End users at Knouse mainly run reports on order management and process manufacturing. This information enables them to determine if inventories are balanced and available, and to see production reporting information such as batches and usages. Noetix is also used for quality assurance reporting and production planning.
Today, Knouse says the biggest benefit of Noetix is that it provides flexibility for non-IT end users to pull their specific data out of Oracle and integrate it with Microsoft Excel in order to use that business intelligence insight to be more successful at their jobs.
“Once we’ve created and saved a view or query, probably 95 percent or more of the reporting can be done by non-IT people. They can simply take that existing view and generate exactly what they need by changing a field or adding a column,” said Hinkle.
