After transitioning from a legacy mainframe ERP system, McKee Foods implemented Oracle® E-Business Suite (EBS) in order to leverage best-of-breed enterprise applications throughout the company. McKee Foods implemented Oracle® Financials, PeopleSoft® Human Resources, GEMMS (now Oracle® Manufacturing), and MPAC (since moved to Maximo) for maintenance and purchasing.
Following this significant transformation, the McKee Foods Information Systems (I/S) team found they were spending a tremendous portion of their time working with Oracle® Discoverer in order to access data within Oracle EBS and develop the business areas for the company’s group of power users.
“We were spending a lot of time developing the business areas for our end users – and without a comprehensive focus, the process involved some overlap and duplication of effort,” said Don Lastine, I/S for Corporate Accounting at McKee Foods. “It required more maintenance than we really wanted or were prepared to take on.”
In 2008, McKee Foods decided to solve their reporting challenges by employing software from Noetix for Oracle Financials. NoetixViews® enables organizations to leverage their current business intelligence infrastructure and tools and deliver faster, easier access to operational data. By simplifying the complex and often confusing enterprise application database into easy-to-use business views, Noetix empowers non technical report writers with the ability to create their own ad hoc queries and custom reports with minimal training or I/S involvement.
The Noetix implementation took two days, and afterwards the users were able to immediately access the information desired for reporting.
According to Lastine, “Before Noetix, we’d have a user tell us that they wanted a certain report containing a certain output. Then the developer or I would go in and see what was available in the business area, add tables to the business area, create joins, and let the users test it. Then, they’d come back and find a problem with the data that we’d overlooked. Not being as familiar with the business end of it, we’d go back in and touch it up a little bit. They’d finally go away happy. This iteration might occur two or three times before we got it right, and the process took hours.”
Following the Noetix implementation, the end users had the ability to use the business views of the data themselves to find the exact fields they needed to run reports on their own without assistance from I/S. If they didn’t end up with the exact information they required, I/S would direct them back to the reporting parameters they’d chosen, which were very easy to manipulate.
The end users were able to look at a broad array of business information including accounts payable, account holds, vendor payouts, and amounts owed. End users were also able to keep better track of ongoing projects and see, at a glance, what resources had been committed versus what had been paid to date.”
Using Noetix, the end users at McKee Foods have seen an increase in the turnaround time from when a need for information is first identified to the time they have it in their hands. They are confident that the information in the reports they create is accurate and no longer need to rely on developers for their business intelligence reporting.
