RAD Data Communications, the originator of Single IP, which enables multiple users to share a common IP address for Internet access, maintains 32 offices on six continents, supporting 300 sales channels in 165 countries.
RAD had operated on Oracle E-Business Suite for ten years and IT was using Oracle Discoverer for its reporting tool. Management felt the company could benefit from more widespread access to a high level of information analysis, statistics, and reporting.
“We were using Discoverer, but widespread use of the tool was limited to the existing reports that were available,” said Peter Kucharik, RAD vice president of operations. “We had one very technical IT person developing customized reports. The reports were run through Discoverer, but there was no flexibility in those reports for end users. If a user wanted to make changes to the report or had specific report requirements, they had to log a request with IT and then wait.”
At that time, most reports contained generic data and were delivered in an Excel format so that users could browse through and edit the report to focus on the more specific information they required for their job function.
Realizing that Discoverer would not be the best long-term solution, RAD began looking at other reporting tools from Oracle, IBM Cognos, and Noetix.
“During the product evaluation, we found greater flexibility with Noetix than with any other product, including Oracle Business Intelligence,” said Kucharik. “We also realized we would have the flexibility to develop our own reporting capability within Noetix because the tables were already mapped there. And our ERP DBA/Developer would be able to develop SQL scripts and customize reports.”
RAD purchased NoetixViews for General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Bill of Materials, Cost Management, and the Supply Chain Management bundles, along with Noetix Generator, Noetix Platform, and Noetix Dashboard. As part of the Noetix implementation, RAD’s IT department and end users received in-house training and were able to generate reports and begin deriving value from the solution “almost immediately,” according to Kucharik.
For example, within the Inventory division, employees now have access to self-service BI and can use Noetix to instantly create reports with information on cycle counts for their specific warehouse location. In the past they were required to sift through a report that included cycle counts from every warehouse location worldwide.
RAD is also improving its customer service by using Noetix to develop customer reports that consolidate and simplify information about all orders including costs, dates, and amounts. These reports are then e-mailed in Excel format via scheduled report subscription services to customer purchasing agents. In addition, our customer request response time for special reports has decreased, and customers receive status reports on a more regular basis. “Today, we can immediately respond to customer’s needs as opposed to going through IT and waiting for a Discoverer report to be generated,” said Kucharik.
Noetix has alleviated the reporting bottleneck at RAD, enabling the process to be delegated to many people who, in most cases, can access the information they require and develop reports without help from IT.
RAD has recently introduced a new Oracle ERP module for Service Contracts, and will be employing NoetixViews as the reporting tool for that data. Through Noetix, Kucharik expects the development of new reports for orders by service, product, type, and cost, along with the ability to distinguish between renewals and new orders and types of service. With all of this new information at their fingertips, RAD employees can establish alert mechanisms that help them know when things like activation certificates need to be sent out, further enhancing the excellent customer service the company provides.
According to Kucharik: “Noetix has changed how RAD interacts with our customers as far as information and servicing, and also changed how we interact with and provide information to our parent company.”
